Henry Ernest Hawkes joined the 170th Battalion Canadian Infantry on 29 April 1916 at Toronto, Ontario. Serving with the 75th Battalion (Mississauga) Canadian Infantry he was killed in action during a trench raid on 1 March 1917 and was buried in La Chaudiere Military Cemetery, Vimy, France. His name is also recorded on the Massey Harris War Memorial in Toronto. With copied war diary extracts detailing the violent and horrific events of that day including the death of two Officers, one missing Officer, 68 other ranks killed, 31 missing and 112 wounded.
