Named the No 1 Canadian Tunnelling Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers, this unit was transferred to Gibralter where its miners hewed out the mountain of limestone to create a subterranean hospital. The tunnel measured 1200 feet by 12 feet high and 12 feet wide. James Y. Murdock, President of Noranda Mines and head of Canada’s wartime Mining Association, struck these medals.
