William Powney was born on 2nd June 1889 in Montreal, Quebec and enlisted at Montreal on 3 November 1914 with the 24th Battalion CEF. He arrived aboard the SS Cameronia on 20 May 1915. He then transferred to the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Private Powney was court-martialled for stealing in January of 1916 and sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment with hard labour, six months of which was suspended. Powney was discharged in 1919 and died in 1945.
