Enlisted 4 January 1916 with the Sick Berth at Portsmouth. He was a Probationary Sick Berth Attendant 4 January 1916; Sick Berth Attendant 6 February 1917; 2nd Sick Berth Steward 29 May 1919; Renamed Listing Sick Berth Attendant 10 August, 1920; Sick Berth Petty Officer.
