A Royal Canadian Navy Corvette Commander's WW2 group of five as awarded to Lieutenant Commander J. E. Francois comprising; 1939/45 Star; Atlantic Star; Canadian Voluntary Service medal with overseas bar; 1939/45 War medal; Canadian Forces Decoration (EIIR) "LCDR J.E. Francois". Swing mounted on a pin. John Eugene Francois entered teh Royal Canadian Navy on 6 September, 1939. He trained at Naden until promoted to Lieutenant on 6 September 1941. After various assignments he was noted as "in command" with Stadacona (Noranda) on 11 January, 1943. He was subsequently posted as Commander of HMCS Thorlock on 13 November 1944 and on 1 July 1945 was promoted to Acting Lieutenant Commander. The Thorlock completed 5 trans-Atlantic crossings on Convoy Escort duty and on her return trip, in company with HMCS Victoriaville, accepted the surrender of the German Submarine U190 on 11th May 1945. The two ships escorted the captured U-Boat into Bull's Bay, Newfoundland. Lieutenant Commander Francois was discharged on 28 August, 1945 following the end of hostilities. He rejoined the Navy at Esquimalt on 27 October 1947 and served through retirement on 28 February 1956.
