An Unusual Gold Gallantry Award Presented by the St. Bernard's Beneficial Association of Philadelphia. A badge in the form of a gold scroll, surrounded by a laurel circlet, the front engraved "Awarded for heroism at collapsed bldg 11th and Market Sts, Phila, PA." The reverse engraved "Presented by St. Bernard's Beneficial Association" suspended from a decorated gold brooch engraved to Ferdinand J. Dittrich. Together with copied newspaper reports of the incident. On 15th July 1915 a building under re-construction in Philadelphia collapsed, burying many workers. Dittrich was one of the first to enter the ruins and "did heroic work in assisting to rescue the injured who were buried in the ruins. From head to foot he was covered in bloodstains." Dittrich personally rescued two people from the rubble.
